MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE INTELLIGENT ALIENS EXIST, POLL SAYS
BY DOUGLAS MAIN ON 9/29/15 AT 1:45 PM http://www.newsweek.com/most-people-believe-intelligent-aliens-exist-377965
The poll surveyed 1,000 or more people in each country and had a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
American men (65 percent) were significantly more likely than women (46 percent) to believe in extraterrestrial intelligent life.
People in the South and West (both at 57 percent) were more likely to assert aliens’ existence than those skeptical Northeasterners (47 percent).
The surveyors asked Americans who said smart aliens don’t exist to explain why. Nearly two-thirds responded that it’s because “humans were created by a God or another higher being,” and 31 percent chose the response that “the Earth is unique—it is the only place capable of sustaining intelligent life.”
So if there are smart aliens, why haven’t they contacted us? Forty-two percent of Americans said it’s because “human technology is not advanced enough for us to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligent life.”
People are a little less sure about the wisdom of trying to contact aliens. Only 43 percent of Americans support a program that “aims to send a digital message describing life on earth to other intelligent civilizations in space,” while 31 percent say the message shouldn’t be sent.
America Vs Britain Vs United States
You are not alone: most people believe that aliens exist https://yougov.co.uk/news/2015/09/24/you-are-not-alone-most-people-believe-aliens-exist/
Germans (56%) are the most likely to believe this, followed by Americans (54%) and then British people (52). At most a third (32% in Germany) assertively do not believe in extra-terrestrial live, although this is lower in Britain and the US.
Men, across all three countries, are more likely to believe in extra-terrestrial life. Only in Germany do a majority of women (51%) believe. The oldest people are the least likely to believe in all three countries – in Britain, for example, 45% of over-60s believe in aliens compared to 59% of 18-24s.
The Fermi paradox or Fermi’s paradox, named after physicist Enrico Fermi, is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence and high probability estimates, e.g., those given by the Drake equation, for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations.
According to this line of reasoning, the Earth should have already been visited by extraterrestrial aliens. In an informal conversation, Fermi noted no convincing evidence of this, leading him to ask, “Where is everybody?” There have been many attempts to explain the Fermi paradox, primarily either suggesting that intelligent extraterrestrial life is extremely rare or proposing reasons that such civilizations have not contacted or visited Earth.
