Scientists said Thursday that if water exists on the planet, geothermal heating could create a subsurface ocean where primitive life might exist. The planet orbits Barnard’s Star, which is the second-nearest star system to the Earth. The planet – known as Barnard b – is admittedly a bit on the nippy side at 274 degrees below zero. The researchers’ findings were presented Thursday at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle. The planet and its star are nearby in cosmic terms only: At 30 trillion miles from Earth, Barnard’s Star is the closest single star to our solar system. It’s a barren, frigid world because light from Barnard’s Star provides it with only 2 percent of the energy the Earth receives from the sun. Voyager 1 launched in 1977, which is zipping along at 38,000 mph (61,000 km/h), is currently 11.7 billion miles (18.8 billion kilometers) from Earth. Voyager 2 took a different route through the solar system and is now 9.5 billion miles (15.3 billion km) from home. Voyager 1 entered interstellar space in August 2012, nearly 35 years after blasting off, scientists announced Thursday (Sept. 12). As it leaves our solar system behind, the robotic spacecraft is streaking toward an encounter with a star called AC +79 3888, which lies 17.6 light-years from Earth.
